The Health Risk Studies (HRS) Program is located in the Bureau of Health Promotion with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. This Program conducts telephone surveys related to a wide range of health issues.

Its main function is the implementation of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), which is coordinated and partially funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is the largest continuously conducted telephone survey in the world. It is conducted in every state, the District of Columbia, and several United States territories. The first BRFSS survey in Kansas was conducted by the HRS Program as a point-in-time survey in 1990. The HRS Program has conducted the BRFSS survey for Kansas annually since 1992.

However, the HRS Program conducts other telephone surveys to address data needs on health related issues in Kansas. The surveys HRS conducts can address a specific health issues, cover health issues in small geographic areas, such as counties, or health issues related to specific population groups in Kansas.
