The Kansas Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program facilitated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment was established in July 2003 as a result of funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The purpose of the program is to engage partner organizations in developing a State Cardiovascular Health Plan and facilitate a response to the priority areas identified. Priorities include:

•  Increase control of high blood pressure primarily in adults and older adults.
   
•  Increase control of high blood cholesterol primarily in adults and older adults.
   
•  Increase knowledge of signs and symptoms of heart attack and stroke and the importance of calling 9-1-1.
   
•  Improve emergency response.
   
•  Improve quality of heart disease and stroke care.
   
•  Eliminate health disparities in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, geography, or socio-economic status.
